Straight answers for first-time and seasoned hunters — fundamentals, fieldcraft, and ethics.
-
Start with the wind. Give birds a clean landing hole they can see, then build your decoys around that finish zone. Keep the spread natural, leave room for birds to work, and avoid overcrowding the pocket.
-
More hunters overcall than undercall. Get their attention, read their body language, and let the birds tell you what they want. If they’re committed, less is usually better.
-
Hide comes first. If birds pick you out, the rest doesn’t matter. After concealment, play the wind correctly, then use your decoys to support the story you’re trying to sell.
-
Motion shines when the air is still and your spread needs life. A jerk rig, swimmer, or subtle ripple can make the whole setup feel more natural without overdoing it.
-
Rushing the shot. Let birds finish, keep the group together, and wait until they’re in the hole and committed. Better timing leads to cleaner shots and fewer lost birds.
CALLING & SETUP TIPS
Quick hitters and proven setups — wind, hide, spread, motion, and when to call.
Setup
Wind-first: build the finish lane
Before you place a single decoy, decide where you want birds to land. Put the landing hole where birds can finish comfortably into the wind, then shape the spread around that pocket.
Concealment
Hide the edges, not just the middle
Most setups fail around the outline. Brush the hard lines, break up shadows, and make sure faces, hands, and movement disappear before the first pass.
Calling
Call to turn them, not to force them
Use calling to get attention and guide direction. Once birds are locked in, let the spread and the hide do the rest. Confidence kills more birds than noise.
