The First One

What the Hell Is Punisher Waterfowl?

This isn’t a polished success story. It’s the truth about how a bad idea, a lot of mistakes, and zero intention of quitting turned into something real.

Let’s get one thing straight—me writing a newsletter is borderline ridiculous.

If you know me, you’re probably already laughing.

Some of you know exactly what Punisher Waterfowl is about. Others have no clue. Either way, this is where it started. And no, this isn’t some polished, feel-good success story. There’s already enough of that out there.

This one’s a grind.

Back in 2014, I had a dumb idea:

Start a brand so I could meet more hunters.

That was the whole plan. No strategy. No roadmap. Just fake it, look legit, and hope the invites showed up.

And yeah… some did.

But so did all the experts telling me:

“You won’t last.” “This won’t work.” “Waterfowl brand in Canada? Not a chance.”

And honestly, they had more experience than I did.

But they didn’t have what I had:

Time. And zero intention of quitting.

At the time, I was in the Army. My life was deployments, training, and getting ready for the next one. But somewhere in between all that, this thing started to matter.

Then people started asking:

What is Punisher Waterfowl?

Truth?

I had no idea.

So I did what every rookie does—I made hoodies, hats, and T-shirts and called it a brand.

Thought I had it figured out.

I didn’t.

That first year was a slap in the face.

So naturally, I made it worse.

I ignored my wife’s advice, dumped money into buying gear from another company, and started selling it out of my basement like I knew what I was doing.

I didn’t.

Margins? Garbage. Competition? Big box stores eating everything. Business knowledge? Non-existent.

It failed exactly how you’d expect.

So I pivoted again.

This time, I built my own gear. I took the duffle bag I trusted on deployments and made something that could actually take a beating. No gimmicks. No overthinking it. Just tough, functional gear.

I added a decoy bag too.

The products were solid.

Didn’t matter.

Sales sucked. Margins sucked. And on top of that, I had a bigger brand ripping off my name and logo.

So yeah—real fun stretch.

By 2019, I was staring this thing in the face wondering if it was just a waste of time.

Punisher Waterfowl wasn’t growing. It wasn’t dying either. It was just… stuck.

I brought on a partner. Tried everything—hunts, apparel, sponsors, different angles.

Didn’t matter.

The same question kept coming back:

How The Union 0430 Became a Leading Waterfowl Podcast

We had moments—hosting hunts, building conversations—but it still didn’t feel like anything real.

Then COVID hit.

Everything shut down. No hunts. No hanging out. No blind talk.

And that’s what I missed the most.

So we started recording it.

No production. No script. Just real conversations between guys who live this stuff.

The plan was simple—do it in the off-season, have some laughs, and move on.

But people started listening.

Then more people.

Then they wanted guests.

Then it kept growing.

That’s when The Union 0430 was born.

And no, it’s not about unions in the traditional sense.

It’s about bringing people together. Giving waterfowl hunters a voice. Saying the stuff we actually say in the blind—unfiltered, sometimes stupid, sometimes serious—but always real.

No corporate filter. No fake image.

Just the truth.

And for whatever reason, that hit.

Now it’s become a top waterfowl podcast and has taken me places I never saw coming—hunts, connections, friendships across the continent.

All from a bad idea back in 2014.

What Punisher Waterfowl Means Today for Waterfowl Hunters

So here we are.

And I’ll be honest—I’m still asking the same question:

"What is Punisher Waterfowl?"

And maybe that’s the point.

Because this was never about having it all figured out.

It was about showing up. Taking hits. Learning the hard way. And not quitting when it would’ve been easy to.

No perfect plan. No clean path. Just keep moving.

Because that’s what this is.

And that’s what it’s always been.
